The kiln is stacked with cut English hardwood species e.g. Oak, Hazel, Ash and Chestnut.

A fire is then started in centre of kiln.

Initially kiln lid is slightly raised allowing fire to spread evenly.

Once fire has spread the kiln lid is sealed using sand/soil and chimneys are introduced to provide control of the process.

Once complete carbonisation has been achieved, a point in time determined by the colour and smell of emitted smoke, all air inlets and outlets are sealed. Kiln is then left to cool.

After 24 hours cooling, kiln lid removed allowing charcoal to be graded and bagged.
